When you dream of jewelry...
...what do you see?
At A.L. Jacobs and Sons Jewelers, we are proud to offer jewelry collections to dazzle and delight a wide variety of tastes.
But if you have in mind a jewelry piece that exists only in your dreams, we can bring it to life for you, with our unique CAD/CAM design system.
CAD/CAM is a two-part process of designing real world objects on a computer (CAD) and creating them with a computerized machine (CAM). This technology is essential in making products from light bulbs to airplanes, and it's gaining stature in the jewelry industry.
CAD is an acronym for computer-aided design. It's now possible to create three-dimensional models using software technology. These designs can be rotated and manipulated virtually in software and examined from any angle, built up and cut away like a physical model, and even weighed before they are built.
For the jeweler, CAD modeling has more in common with wax carving than with drafting techniques. Once the virtual model is completed to the designer's specs, the CAD file is sent to a CAM machine for manufacture.
The advantages of CAD/CAM over traditional manufacturing methods are not unlike the advantages of a word processor over a typewriter. A typewriter produces a "one-off" document that can't be modified. But word processor files can be easily modified, copied and pasted into other documents, and saved at each design stage for later use. So it is with CAM/CAD jewelry design.
Starting only from your dreams, this cutting edge technology allows A.L. Jacobs and Sons to take your custom jewelry design ideas and make them a reality.
